Mediatisation of Politics: Politicians as Celebrities!
Politicians have become addicted to the media, and media reports just wouldn’t be the same without politicians as their star protagonists. Moreover, we are currently witnessing a “mediatisation” of politics, with political decisions bending more and more to the will and trends of the media that are turning politics into a show, a spectacle. Politicians share front covers and primetime minutes with actors and musicians… At the same time, media finds their private lives more attractive than their political initiatives. On the other hand, politicians and their media consultants are aware of the media “weaknesses” and successfully generate “attractive” stories to divert the attention from more important issues or try to show themselves in a different light. Thus, we oftentimes witness different official and unofficial statements, secret dinners, summer vacations with friends, love affairs and breakups, new fashion stylings, gastronomic skills…
Who is in charge of this game between the media and politicians? Have all of them forgotten the interests of the citizens? Can the media help in getting the politics to once again serve people rather than rule over them? When will successful scientists be more popular than politicians?

Public Television: Master or Servant to the Public?
Over the past few years in some of the countries in the region public TV has grown into a true phenomenon, while in others it is on the defensive. In places where it is successful, it is undergoing a more or less deep transition, turning from the public service into the basis of the media space, a universal media service. Commercial or not, better or worse, in the function of serving politics more or less… public TV is undeniably a significant factor of social events.
What are the key reasons behind these successs stories, what are the challenges that lie ahead of them, and how are they preparing for the future functions and games…These are just some of the issues that we will try to cover and bring closer to the participants of the Weekend Media Festival through an interesting dialogue between the most important players from the key public television stations in the region.

Basic Principles of the Modern Journalists’ Education
The Zagreb-based Journalism Academy (VNŠ) was founded with the aim of contributing to the development of journalism in Croatia through education and creation of new generations of media professionals who understand the needs of the modern media practice and are able to find their place in the labor market soon after completing their education. A modern, dynamic and multidisciplinary approach trains the students for a competent job execution in various media institutions as well as for the continuation of their education at one of the graduate programs in Croatia and abroad.
Content-wise this particular program is based on the western European tradition and, as a professional program, allows a quality-related advancement in realizing the educational plan and program as well as establishing partnership relations between the factors of the media process. This establishes a bridge between the tradition and modern media and social trends and developments. As a prerequisite of accomplishing this particular goal, partnership relations have been established with a number of media organizations in Croatia and special programs have been organized in cooperation with various companies, through which the students will familiarize themselves with the operation of different businesses and functions of different economic sectors.

Participants:
Ružica Cigler (Lecturer at VNŠ, Member of the Supervisory Board and Advisor to the Management Board of Večernji list, Croatia), Dražen Klarić (Program Director at Kapital Network, Croatia), Iva Biondić (Vice-President of the Management Board of VNŠ, Croatia)

Future of Media Agencies: Media-Agencies-Advertisers
Through this duscussion we are going to compare the similarities and differences between the media markets in the region, and discuss the advertiser-agency-media triangle. Are we all on the same side or are our interests different?
How much do the advertisers understand the importance of media planning? More than ever before the media are also offering multimedia and multiregional platforms; however, do the agencies have the capacities to handle the new approach? The role of the specialist in a creative agency is increasingly overlapping with that of a planner in a media agency; does that mean that cooperation or integration are what the future holds? It will be interesting to hear how the traditional media is fighting to keep the ‘mobile’ population that is turning more and more toward the new media…

Celebrity Culture in the Region - Stylists, Starlets and Scandals! Advertising?
Each day there are more and more faces appearing in newspapers and on TV, known only by deceptions, scandal and gossip. We would like to know who these celebrities are and how to become one? One of the main topics of this discussion is the media creation of people who become interesting to the public only because of the tricks they use for personal propaganda; and the everlasting question: Did the media create the celebrity public or did the public create the media? Advertisers have also recognized the trend of yellow press but they sometimes forget that REACH doesn’t always matter, and that WHO the reader is is perhaps more important.

Internet Radio: Main Business or Side-kick?
Internet, as the new media, has failed to finish off the old media, but it has instead given them a new dimension and attracted new audiences for them. As the fastest medium, the radio has been given a new channel for further expansion – through the Internet it can be listened to in any part of the world. Beside the fact that nowadays every respectable radio station airs its program over the Internet as well, there is still an indefinite number of radio stations on the global network that are unavailable on either the ultra-short wave or the short wave. With the accelerated development of technology and the possibility of making Internet radio mobile – so it can be listened to in the car and on mobile electronic devices – comes the question whether this particular way of broadcasting will be nothing more than a side project for the radio stations or if it will become dominant?
